Art Cleaning and Repairs
A recent large repair project was an old
ornate plaster frame and oil painting that
was the basis for this Currier & Ives print,
circa 1840(?).
1. Torn painting and broken
frame as picked up from client
2. Major rips and sherdded holes
mean the painting needs lining
3. On the back, prior
patches needed rework
4. Off the hand-made stretchers,
the bottom 2 inches of the painting
had been REPLACED with a poorly
done patch job.
5. A new canvas lining adhered
by hot wax, and 1st of 3 cleanings
done- It's so much brighter!
The original bottom 2" of
the painting are missing so
there is no visible signiture,
and the C&I Museum had no
data other than Fanny
Palmer was the original
artist for the lithograph.
The 5'-8" x 4'-7" Frame was its own project-
Six of the 8 eagles were missing or broken,
and the plaster detailing was crumbling in
many spots.

A rubber cast was made from a good eagle to
reproduce the two missing units. Broken
sections were rebuilt and carved by hand
This finished repair project started
as the disaster below-
