theatre set design |
I have done more than 30 Theatre Sets for the Keegan Theatre Company and several other professional theatre groups in and around Washington, DC. |
My approach to each set is to give the Director what he wants, but see the design as an ART INSTALLATION, a work unto itself. (and then hope those pesky actors don't get in the way too much!) I get the first 30 seconds of "Wow!" and then the play's the thing |
More than just designing these sets, I also did most of the scenic painting as well as most of the set construction involved. |

Elements of the portable Set System |
on 19' wide stage at Arts Barn |
<< I designed a portable Set System for the ArtStream Theater Co. that is so versatile it can be adapted to fit a wide variety of stages, and still serve as the set for numerous original plays for several seasons. This Set System consists of (6) 6' x 8' painted booked flats, a sign post and base, and(5) nesting cubes. Add an occasional set piece for the particular production and it's "ON WITH THE SHOW!" This set has easily packed into my small pick-up truck for transport. But we were able to fill this 42 ' wide stage at T.Jefferson M.S. (Arlington, VA), as well as fit onto the 19' Kentlands (Gaithersburg, MD) Arts Barn black box . |

One trick I've employed on most of these sets is the use of roofing felt, or "tar paper" It paints beautifully, moulds into stone walls, and comes with a natural flat black finish. And the kicker for small theatre companies-- it's CHEAP ! |
